Southern California MR2 Meet, April 19, 1997!

Sunday April 19, 1997. Patrick does it again -- this time he's getting us warmed up for the First Annual Golden State MR2 Rally next month!

We met at Santiago College, in a parking lot sized perfectly for our group! I used a crappy camera this time (had to use up the roll from the disposable waterproof camera that had my Maui pictures from last March -- but the good part of this is that I was able to finish the roll and show everyone this picture of a Hawaiian MR2 I ran into at the Maui High Performance Computer Center (I know, what a geek, I go to Maui and get a tour of their supercomputer center!)

Anyway, back to the rally. We stood around and did the MR2-admiring thing for a while, and then headed out for Santiago Canyon Road (isn't this a nice shot of my hand -- guess I can drive or take pictures, but not both!!!) towards our lunch destination, Cook's Corner . Here are some pictures of our MR2s in the Party Parking section! The folks at Cook's Corner were very cool to save a large parking area for us. Here's one view from the front and another from the side .

Who wants to describe the ambience at Cook's Corner? ;-)

After lunch, I took off for home, while some of the others headed further south towards Laguna Beach. Hope yall found some parking spots! Be sure to tell us all about it!

Everyone please sign in and tell me what fun I missed by not going to Laguna Beach!

And, as usual, if anyone has a cool photo or a write-up of the event, I'll add it or link to it! I still don't have my digital camera.

Nancy <nancy@spin-web.com> I tried to get Taz to wear his seatbelt but he kept taking it off to wave at the chicks as we drove by them on the freeway! Brad is *much* better behaved... too bad he couldn't make it to this rally. He was bummed to see that we had TWO yellow 2's at this meet, and he missed it (he always did want me to buy a yellow one)! :-)

Mike Takata <boostup@earthlink.net> It's always fun hanging out with fellow mr2-ers. I didn't make it to Laguna Beach but ended up at South Coast Plaza instead. Hey Nancy, was Taz wearing his seatbelt???

Magnus Lindgren <magnus@continuus.com> Hmmm, I overslept and still managed to be there at noon (more meetings in Orange County! :-). "Hanging out" for a couple of hours, taking pictures and talking MR2 is always fun. And how about that older, distinguished biker guy trying to find a buyer for a '94 MR2 Turbo?! A real fun event and specially fun with all the new people showing up this time!

Russ and Linda Butler <rbutler4@ix.netcom.com> Our first rally!! Wonderful time, it was great meeting the others and seeing all of the other cars. It made the drive from Virginia worth the trip! Best part is, Linda has really gotten into and suggested a few upgrades on the way home (bra, driving lights, etc.) We'll be doing the big one in May for sure.

Patrick Smith <psmith@mofo.com> Thanks for showinig up everyone. We had 15 MR2s. A lot of new faces this time. And some return faces as well. Looking FWD to the Golden State Rally in May. ( Don't miss it ) The drive to Cook's Corner was short but sweet. ( What happen to the SD guys ? ) And yes Gerald I have seem to have grown a good reaction time with the break when i see CHP :) Gerald , thanks , my exhaust is nice , but your car got the prize for "UPGRADES" . WOW!!! what a car..... Anyway the stop for food was good, like the Party Parking. The dive to Laguna was nice ( no prob with parking. ) and the beach is always nice. My pics should be out soon on my www page. See ya at the next meet. The Willow Springs is coming along very well and should be a good day at the track. Until next time ...Patrick

Gerald San Agustin <geraldsa@ix.netcom.com> It was my first rally and certainly not my last. Good to see so many loyal MR2 owners in one parking lot (remember that one guy in a blazer(??) that couldn't keep from yelling out his opinion on imports). Anyways, I felt the drive to Cook's corner seemed too short (or were we driving too fast? ... hey Patrick.... those were some quick reactions to the brakes when you saw that CHP! =). I really enjoyed the talk we had after that nice and greasy bacon cheeseburger. Sorry I couldn't make it to Laguna Beach. I had a little fun with Patrick on route to Interstate 5 (BTW, your exhaust sounds mean under full throttle). I hope to see everyone again real soon....

Colin Burns <alkirab@gte.net> What a blast!!! This was my first outing with the S. Cal. group, and I found everybody extremely friendly and pleasant. I've never experienced so many pristine and spotless MR2's in one spot. Meeting in the Santiago College lot was a good central location. Heading out en masse from the college towards Cooks Corners (aka the "Bikers'Bar of No Return" was a great run. Lots of heads were turning as we headed out......even the Highway Patrol grinned as we passed a couple of opposite-heading Troopers giving away party invitations to a less-than fortunate driver. Lunch at the "Cooks" was pretty interesting too. Our reserved parking area in the lot was great. Lot's of experiences and goodwill exchanged over food bites. The restrooms were really interesting.....gave a new meaning to public forums. The drive onto Laguna was a real challenge. As we headed through El Toro and passed Leisure World, a whole new meaning to obstacle course came to mind. The Trip through the Canyon and into Laguna Beach was really a great way to complete the journey as the narrow and curvey, single lane streets gave challenge to all of the tightly-spaced, well-manuevered, and shiney Mr2 club enthusiasts vehicles. It was a good time for all. Probably will be a week or two to get that grin to come off. I look forward to the next outing. Patrick, keep up the good work, including the photo's. Regards, Colin Burns '93 Grey Stock

Jerry Cornelison <glc311@pe.net> Had a great time. Looking forward to the Golden State Rally in May. Five of us made it all the way to Laguna. Had quite a time staying together thru Laguna Canyon. Drew some admiring looks from people we passed by. Add me to the mailing list. I'd like to participate in more of these get-togethers! Great write-up and picts of today's trip. Even got my MR2 in a couple of the pictures.

Nancy Perry <nancy@spin-web.com> Hey guys it was nice to see everyone again... even though I was kind of "out of it" after my long drive by every rush hour, every tourist, and every freeway striping crew in Los Angeles. ;-) I hope to be able to join yall on the Golden State Rally next month, but I might be going on my own rally -- a move to Austin, Texas. It's not for sure yet, but will be solidified this week. See ya! MOV OVR! :-)
