Southern California MR2 Meet, October 20, 1996!

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

We had a great turnout at the October 20 Southern California MR2 meet. Thanks again to Patrick Smith for organizing it. There were so many MR2s there (sixteen!!) that I didn't even get the chance to meet everyone! Now's your chance to introduce yourself to me: tell me who you are, what you drove, did you have a personalized plate, what you ate for lunch, whatever will jog my feeble old memory! I'd like to keep track of the attendees, and since my memory is the PITS can everyone please sign in and remind me?

And if anyone has a cool photo or a write-up of the event, I'll add it here! Shoulda known, Patrick was the first to submit his writeup!

Cool! Our first picture... here's Mike Takata's Angeles Crest shot of us at our first photo-stop! You'll see Peter Scott in the blue shirt and Dan Barnes in the white shirt and me bending over reaching into my 2 (now isn't that attractive... NOT!) and maybe that's Patrick behind my car in the orange shirt (I can't tell... old age, ya know).

(10/24/96) Ok guys, I've got my pictures developed and they're not that great. :-( So if anyone can improve on them, please send them my way and I'll replace mine with yours!

Troy put together a nice collection of pics from the trip! I'm jazzed that he got one of us at the Sand Canyon off-ramp! I thought of taking that shot too late (and I was driving, it was kinda hard to take pics at the moment).

Let's see, first we all met in the Rusty Pelican parking lot . It was kind of a free-for-all as we all looked at each other's 2's. Then Patrick (don't let him fool you thinking he is not organized... he did such a good job of keeping us on schedule!) rounded us all up to give us our directions for the rally. (thanks to Peter Scott for the photo)

I was so excited driving out of the Rusty Pelican parking lot that I took this picture of all the MR2-butts in front of me! Then we headed out for first stop, 5 miles up Angeles Crest. Mike T's picture was better than mine, so check that one out! Here's a rear view of all the MK IIs at the turnout. Peter got a good side view and top view of the 2s. He also took this good complete shot of the place we first turned off the road. I've got some more pictures from Peter, but haven't had time to scan them in yet...

Then we went on the long leg of the trip, where our pal in the white MKII (LWLL, where are you, you haven't signed in on my page!) got mashed by the rockslide. We all met up at this stop sign leading to Palmdale. This was very cool!

Then we headed to Coco's for lunch and MR2-talk. I didn't get a picture here, but I should have!

So Cal MR2 Meet Attendees ( I KNOW there were more of you there than this! Don't be shy!)

Eric Chan <eric@acssouth.com> Hey Nancy, very nice job on this huge home page on the rally, I am amazed. BTW, I'm LWLL, as you noted in the home page. I haven't fix the hood yet, but who would let their MR2 stays ugly, right. I'm really sorry to hear the accident of the guy from San Francisco. See you all next time and I think I'm really late to sign in to this great page.

Lynne Rogers <L.R.Rogers@reading.ac.uk> Sorry to interrupt - greetings from the UK MR2 Drivers' Club. We're trying to locate sister groups around the world and came across your write-up. Wish we'd been there. Maybe another time. Do get in touch. I have a red mark 2 t-bar, 1991. Turbos are VERY rare in the UK. Is there an address where we can send you info on what's happening in the UK? Regards, Lynne Rogers MR2DC

Terry My thoughts on the run: fine job you have done Pat in orchestrating this thing, must come from working in the legal profession. Keep up the good work, we are now relying on you. Troy (San Marcos) and myself re-ran the route after CoCo's, except we continued on out Rt. 2 just for kicks. Goodness me, what a fine strech of road, very twisty, very beautiful, very dark at nite, and very much in need of a gas station. WARNING- fill her up before you do this run. NO GAS until Wrightwood. Ran the 2 to I-15 for a quick, traffic free shot home. Looking forward to the next Meet/Willows. Till then keep yer motors hot and yer spools cool. T.

Alan Macias <amacias@aol.com> I am the one in the orange shirt in your picture. My wife, Marilyn and I had a great time at the rally. We were the ones from San Francisco. As a side note on the way back in Kettleman City along I-5 I took an onramp too briskly and slid sideways in the sand on the shoulder and bent my left front rim really bad, in fact it is off to the body shop for some body panel alignment...oh well I still had a great time I would do the rally again (except for the expensive damage of course).

Mike Koury <turn6@earthlink.net> Remember me? Well, I was driving one of the white MR2's (dark hair, unshaven, black shorts) and Barbara (blonde, bib overall jean shorts). We were glad we showed up for the MR2 Rally. It was pretty cool to see all the MR2's together and watch them perform. We were really happy to meet the people we did (especially Allen & Marilyn) and would love to hear from them. See you next time.

Nancy Perry <nancy.perry@jpl.nasa.gov> Yea, Joel, I did notice that your "MGD" MR2-butt was a camera hog, always posing for shots! ;-) Peter Scott just sent me some photos to scan this weekend, and guess what... more MGD-butt shots! :-)

Nancy Perry <nancy.perry@jpl.nasa.gov> Hey Patrick -- how about when I blew by you on the 14? Does that count? I didn't realize that I was passing the "leader" until I was already doing it! :-) And hey, if you think you need to apologize for not being organized enough, you'd better think again! The rally was the most organized thing I've ever seen!

Patrick Smith <psmith@mofo.com> I was the guy who organized the whole thing and led the rally through the crest. I was wearing the red Pete's Wicked Ale shirt. I want to thank everyone for showing up. I ate the Chicken Pesto Linguini at CoCo's. Yum. Keep your eyes open for Willow Springs Raceway next year. Also watch for the second annual So. Cal MR2 rally in Feb '97. "Practice up on your driving skills because the next rally's going to be a brutal drive." I need somebody to keep up with me next time. :)

Chris Johns <RumRunner@southland.net> I was the only one with a BLUE MR2. It was fantastic (thanks Patrick). I can't wait to see the pictures posted!! I would of especially liked to have seen us from the roadside when we hit 100+ mph in the strait away...

Gennie Nazareno <gnazaren@continuus.com> I'm the passenger of the 'quiet one' ;-) I think special recognition should go to the passengers of the rally. Those turns were kind of hard on the stomach...

Magnus Lindgren <magnus@continuus.com> Hmmm, I was reading my last entry and I made it sound like I was a quiet one.... I didn't meen it that way, what I was meaning was we (as in you and me) didn't talk much, it was just to many people to get acquainted too. Have I confused people enough now :-) Thanks again Patrick for a really nice outing. WILLOW SPRINGS, WILLOW SPRINGS, WILLOW SPRINGS........

Paul Davis <DAVISinLA@aol.com> I was wearing the "LA Weekly" hat (I work there). Also, because I didn't have the time to complete the run, I drove west on the 210 instead of east. (I hope no one followed me!) What a great time. Let's do it again soon.
