Bogues plays catch-up as games loom

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Muggsy Bogues is back on the court practicing. But it might take a while before his role for the Charlotte Hornets starts taking shape.

Bogues went through his second workout, his first in a scrimmage, Wednesday at San Jose State as the Hornets continued preparations for Friday's preseason opener against the Golden State Warriors.

He played about six minutes of a scrimmage that went about 25 minutes, with projected starting point guard David Wesley and other backups Tony Delk and Corey Beck getting the bulk of the time at that position.

The other guards are four days ahead of Bogues in terms of training camp conditioning.

Bogues' limited role might have had as much to do with his late start in camp as anything else. He missed the first four days because of his refusal to take a magnetic resonance imaging exam required by the Hornets as part of his pre-camp physical.

Bogues, 32, took the exam Monday, then went through a workout Tuesday that did not include a scrimmage before the team flew to San Jose.

``We'll just kind of play that by ear,'' coach Dave Cowens said of Bogues' role. ``Once we get pared down some it will take care of itself.''

Bogues acknowledged that, ``Basically I'm four days behind. I'm just doing whatever I'm asked to do. . . . Whenever they rotate to you, you just have to be ready.''

The Hornets will practice twice today before playing the Warriors Friday.
