NBA basketball player Tyus Edney has teamed up with Tom Nix Jr., a Carson businessman, to sponsor an essay contest and basketball camp for 300 kids from the inner city and surrounding communities.
On Aug. 13, children from Wilmington, Harbor City, San Pedro, Carson, Gardena, Lennox, Inglewood and other Los Angeles-area neighborhoods will converge at Long Beach Polytechnic High School to learn basketball skills and hobnob with Edney and other NBA greats during the Tyus Edney Summer Slam Camp.
Edney, who is 5 feet 10 inches tall, played a significant role in UCLA's 1995 NCAA Basketball Championship with his infamous split-second layup against University of Missouri. He most recently played for the Boston Celtics but is currently a free agent. During the basketball camp, he will give motivational pep talks along with other popular players.
The 25-year-old is nostalgic about the skills he received at basketball camps when he was a child growing up in Compton and Long Beach.
"I wanted the opportunity to give back to the community that helped me to get to where I am today," said Edney, a Long Beach Polytechnic High School graduate. "I want to inspire kids to set their goals and try to accomplish their dreams." Working with Edney to help fulfill those dreams is Nix Jr., president of Nix Check Cashing, who said he and his employees also want to help inner-city kids and their families.
"We think this a terrific opportunity for our company to invest in the future well-being of our community by creating personal-growth experiences," Nix said.
Interested parents and their youngsters will need to stop by a Nix Check Cashing outlet in Wilmington, Carson, Inglewood, Westchester or elsewhere in the South Bay to sign up for the basketball camp.
Parents will need to fill out an entry form and submit a short statement of 25 words or less explaining why their child or children should be selected as participants in the basketball camp.
A committee comprised of Edney, various other basketball players, marketing consultants and Nix Check Cashing managers will choose the 300 best entries. ****

The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 13 at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, 1600 Atlantic Ave., Long Beach. Call (909) 396-7722 for more information.
